Woodland Caribou - Newfoundland

The woodland caribou is a neat animal. The bulls gather up harems like elk, they make rub lines like whitetails. Hunting them in the rut (October) is most interesting. They, basically, do not migrate, so unlike the very iffy situation when hunting Quebec Labrador caribou, you know the woodland caribou will always be there. It’s a spot and stalk situation with some long hikes on open and spongy tundra. Take good and comfortable waterproof boots, and good rain gear. You will need it. I bowhunted for woodland caribou in 1998 with Wayne Holloway of Pine Ridge Lodge. My partner and I had a great hunt and took 2 really fine Pope and Young bulls. I highly recommend this bowhunt. You fly to Gander and Wayne picks you up in his sea plane and flies you to one of his 3 camps.

In the fall of 2001 I hunted caribou with Barb Genge at Tuckamore Lodge. This is a first rate camp. The lodge is a bed and breakfast, of the highest quality. Your wife will love it. There is great food, private bedrooms with private baths, the guides are excellent, and the area she has is huge. There are big caribou there, but you have to be in shape to walk in the bogs....and walk long distances. It's spot and stalk, and the animals are there. You need good quality, quiet rain gear (that means Goretex), and knee high rubber boots (but they need to fit because you walk miles). Once you get a bull, Barb has a woman in Main Brook that butchers, packs, vacuum seals, and ships your meat. She does the best job on meat that I've ever had done on big game.
